#WomanLifeFreedom

On September 16th 2022, Masa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman died after being arrested by Iran’s ‘morality police’ for wearing her hijab ‘immodestly’. During Amini’s funeral, crowds gathered chanting the words ‘women, life, freedom’. This slogan has since been adopted in protests throughout Iran and beyond and encapsulates the sentiment fuelling the current mass uprising for justice.

For decades gender inequality and discrimination against women has been legally enshrined in Iran. Under Iran’s Islamic Penal Code, Iranian women’s right are severely restricted in what is essentially gender apartheid. Women must comply with the Islamic Republic’s mandatory hijab laws and they are unequal in matters of marriage, divorce, custody, inheritance and more.

In solidarity with Iranian women and girls who are courageously demonstrating for their fundamental human rights, Pedrami Gallery (founded by Iranian born Kathy Pedrami and focusing on Middle Eastern artists) presents a group exhibition of work by Eileen Cohen Süssholz, Wendy Krochmal, Roghayeh Najdi, Nasser Bakhshi, Tarek Shabout and Maryam Najd.

The artists hereby seek to amplify the voices of those women and their daughters bravely pursuing their claim to basic human rights and dignity for all women in Iran.
